Name Change FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about our Name Change:

1. Why did you decide to change your name?

We believe that we will be more effective advocates and that more people will feel welcome in our Chapter if our name reflects our mission rather than an individual.

2. Will you remain affiliated with the National Audubon Society?

Yes. We will retain the affiliation and will show this affiliation in all our literature and on our website and on social media.

3. Will you lose Audubon funding?

No. Elizabeth Gray, Chief Executive Officer of NAS has stated:
“Some of the chapters have already announced their intention to change,” Gray said. “What’s really important for me to underscore here and for them to know is that we’re going to continue to work with all the chapter leaders as a unified community moving forward. We’re all committed to the same mission.”

4. What difference will the name change make to your work?

We plan to continue with all current projects, while adding more opportunities for youth and new birders throughout our community to participate in birding, conservation and educational work. We will add more outreach to community partners and environmental groups to expand our reach. Our goal is to welcome everyone to advocate for and enjoy birds.

5. How will you publicize your name change so the community knows about this and still recognizes you?

We will share our new name with all our community partners.

We will phase in the change over a limited amount of time in our literature, on our website, and on social media, by including our new name and our ‘previously known as’ name.

6. When will you decide on a new name?

We do not have a timetable for choosing or announcing a new name. Our Board of Directors began working on this change in August of 2023 and we will continue until we decide on a name that reflects our mission and purpose.

7. How can I help?

Give us your ideas for a new name by using the Contact Us form on our website. Spread the word about the positive reasons for changing our name. Once a name has been chosen, help us promote our new image and enhance our outreach. Volunteer with us to help us protect birds and bring the joy of birding to everyone.
